Nene: A Hmong Girl Who Refused to Give Up, Weaving a New Future Through Handicrafts
Hello, my name is Miss Neng Saetor, but everyone calls me “Nene.” I am a young Hmong woman who grew up in the mountains. I was born in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic before my parents decided to bring our family to Thailand to start a new life when I was still a child.
The First Lesson of Life: Family and Perseverance
When we first moved to Thailand, my family lived with my uncle and aunt, as we did not yet have a home of our own. My parents took on any work they could find—farming, gardening, and general labour—saving every bit they earned. After more than a year, my father was finally able to build a small bamboo house with a thatched roof, giving our family a place to call home.
As the second child among seven siblings, growing up in a family with limited financial resources, I witnessed my parents’ dedication every day. Although income from farming was uncertain, they did everything within their power to ensure that all of their children could receive an education.
A Decision for the Greater Good: From General Education to Vocational Studies
During primary school, educational expenses were still manageable. However, when we reached secondary school, the financial burden became heavier—especially with three siblings studying at similar levels.
After completing lower secondary school (Grade 9), two of my siblings and I made a joint decision not to continue in general upper secondary education. Instead, we chose to pursue vocational education. This decision allowed our parents to continue supporting our younger siblings’ education. During the three years of vocational study, I gained hands-on work experience and had opportunities to earn income while studying, helping to ease my family’s financial burden.
A Turning Point Amid Life’s Storms
After completing vocational education, I took a two-year break from school to work and save money for a bachelor’s degree. During that time, a major loss struck our family—my father passed away suddenly. The life plans I had carefully made had to change immediately. I devoted myself to working hard to help my mother support my younger siblings’ education first.
One day, when an opportunity arose, I came to work in Chiang Mai and met Pastor Lee Kian Cheng of the Thai Tabernacle Church. After listening to my story, he offered guidance that changed my perspective on life. He encouraged me to return to university and complete my bachelor’s degree, even though at that time I had very little savings.
A New Battle Within the University Walls
I decided to resume my studies with savings that were only enough to cover tuition fees and living expenses for a few months. In my first year, I received initial support from the Thai Tabernacle Church Student Loan Fund. Later, I was given a significant opportunity when I received a scholarship from the “Create Your Future Foundation” starting from my second semester. In addition, I was kindly allowed to stay in accommodation provided by the Thai Tabernacle Church at a special rate, greatly reducing expenses for rent, water, and electricity. This support enabled me to focus more fully on my studies.
The Birth of Handicrafts: Crochet Flowers
Although I worked part-time alongside my studies, earning only 2,000–3,000 baht (62-93 USD) per month was not sufficient to cover living expenses. I began looking for ways to earn additional income. This journey started when Su, a member in Thai Tabernacle Church, taught me how to crochet and supported me by providing tools and yarn.
From my very first tulip—created through months of trial and error—I gradually developed my skills through self-learning and watching YouTube tutorials. I learned to crochet roses, sunflowers, and framed embroidered animal designs. Every piece is made with intention, care, and a deep love for handicrafts that I have cultivated over time.
Moving Forward with Hope
Today, my crochet work has become more widely recognised and can generate supplementary income during important seasons such as graduation ceremonies, Valentine’s Day, and Mother’s Day. Although this income is not consistent throughout the year, it plays a vital role in supporting my expenses and allowing me to continue my education.
Having grown up with embroidery and handicrafts, I chose to study International Business at the Faculty of Management Science, at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. Through my studies in management and international logistics, I aim to further develop crochet work—an artisanal craft with a unique identity that is still valued by many.
In the future, I hope that crochet and other handicrafts can be developed into export products for international markets, while also creating income opportunities for people in my community through skills they already possess. This, I believe, can help strengthen communities and promote sustainable livelihoods.

สวัสดีค่ะ ฉันชื่อ นางสาวเน้ง แซ่ท่อ หรือที่ทุกคนเรียกกันว่า “เนเน่”
ฉันเป็นหญิงสาวชาวม้งที่เติบโตบนดอย เดิมทีฉันเกิดที่สาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว ก่อนที่คุณพ่อคุณแม่จะตัดสินใจพาทุกคนอพยพเข้ามาเริ่มต้นชีวิตใหม่ในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ฉันยังเป็นเด็ก
บทเรียนแรกของชีวิต: ครอบครัวและความพยายาม
ในช่วงเริ่มต้นที่ย้ายมาอยู่ในประเทศไทย ครอบครัวของเราอาศัยอยู่กับคุณลุงคุณป้า เพราะยังไม่มีบ้านเป็นของตนเอง คุณพ่อคุณแม่รับจ้างทำงานทุกอย่าง ตั้งแต่ทำไร่ทำสวนไปจนถึงงานรับจ้างทั่วไป เพื่อเก็บหอมรอมริบจนกระทั่งผ่านไปปีเศษ คุณพ่อจึงสามารถสร้างบ้านหลังเล็กๆ จากไม้ไผ่มุงหลังคาหญ้าคาให้พวกเราได้มีที่พักพิง
ในฐานะลูกคนที่ 2 จากพี่น้องทั้งหมด 7 คน ท่ามกลางฐานะทางบ้านที่ค่อนข้างยากจน ฉันเห็นความทุ่มเทของคุณพ่อคุณแม่มาโดยตลอด แม้รายได้จากการเกษตรจะไม่แน่นอน แต่ท่านทั้งสองก็พยายามอย่างสุดความสามารถเพื่อให้ลูกๆ ทุกคนได้เรียนหนังสือ
การตัดสินใจเพื่อส่วนรวม: จากสายสามัญสู่สายอาชีพ
ในช่วงประถมศึกษา ค่าใช้จ่ายในการเรียนยังไม่สูงนัก แต่เมื่อเข้าสู่ระดับมัธยม ภาระทางการเงินเริ่มหนักขึ้น โดยเฉพาะเมื่อมีพี่น้อง 3 คนที่ต้องเข้าเรียนในระดับชั้นใกล้เคียงกัน
หลังจากเรียนจบชั้นมัธยมปีที่ 3 ฉันและพี่น้องอีก 2 คน จึงตัดสินใจร่วมกันว่าจะไม่เรียนต่อในระดับมัธยมปลาย แต่เลือกที่จะศึกษาต่อในสายอาชีพ (ปวช.) แทน เพื่อให้คุณพ่อคุณแม่สามารถส่งน้องๆ เรียนต่อได้ การเรียนสายอาชีพตลอด 3 ปี ทำให้ฉันได้เรียนรู้การทำงานจริง และมีโอกาสสร้างรายได้ระหว่างเรียนเพื่อช่วยแบ่งเบาภาระของครอบครัวอีกทางหนึ่ง
จุดเปลี่ยนท่ามกลางมรสุมชีวิต
เมื่อจบ ปวช. ฉันเลือกหยุดเรียนเป็นเวลา 2 ปี เพื่อตั้งใจทำงานเก็บเงินสำหรับเรียนต่อในระดับปริญญาตรี แต่ในระหว่างนั้นความสูญเสียครั้งใหญ่ก็มาถึง เมื่อคุณพ่อได้จากไปอย่างกะทันหัน
แผนชีวิตที่วางไว้ต้องเปลี่ยนไปทันที ฉันต้องทุ่มเทแรงกายแรงใจทำงานเพื่อช่วยคุณแม่ส่งเสียน้องๆ ให้ได้เรียนต่อก่อน
จนกระทั่งวันหนึ่งเมื่อโอกาสมาถึง ฉันได้มาทำงานที่เชียงใหม่และมีโอกาสรู้จักกับ อาจารย์ลี เคียน เฉง ศิษยาภิบาลของคริสตจักรไทยพลับพลา ท่านได้ฟังเรื่องราวของฉันและให้คำแนะนำที่เปลี่ยนความคิดฉันไปตลอด โดยท่านสนับสนุนให้ฉันกลับไปเรียนปริญญาตรีให้จบ แม้ในตอนนั้นฉันจะมีเงินเก็บเพียงน้อยนิดก็ตาม
การต่อสู้ครั้งใหม่ในรั้วมหาวิทยาลัย
ฉันตัดสินใจกลับมาเรียนต่อด้วยเงินเก็บที่มีเพียงพอสำหรับค่าเทอมและค่าครองชีพเพียงไม่กี่เดือนเท่านั้น ในปีแรกฉันได้รับการช่วยเหลือเบื้องต้นจากกองทุนกู้ยืมเพื่อการศึกษาของคริสตจักรไทยพลับพลา และต่อมาได้รับโอกาสครั้งสำคัญคือการได้รับทุนการศึกษาจาก “มูลนิธิทุนศึกษาสร้างฝัน” ตั้งแต่ภาคเรียนที่ 2 เป็นต้นไป
นอกจากนี้ ฉันยังได้รับความเมตตาให้พักในห้องพักของคริสตจักรไทยพลับพลาในราคาพิเศษ ซึ่งช่วยลดภาระค่าที่พัก ค่าน้ำ และค่าไฟไปได้มาก ทำให้ฉันสามารถจดจ่อกับการเรียนได้อย่างเต็มที่มากขึ้น
จุดกำเนิดงานฝีมือ: ดอกไม้จากโครเชต์
แม้จะทำงานพาร์ทไทม์ควบคู่การเรียนไปด้วย แต่รายได้เพียงเดือนละ 2,000–3,000 บาท ยังไม่เพียงพอต่อการดำรงชีวิต ฉันจึงมองหาช่องทางสร้างรายได้เสริม จุดเริ่มต้นเกิดจากการที่ พี่สุ หนึ่งในสมาชิกของคริสตจักรไทยพลับพลา ช่วยสอนฉันถักโครเชต์ และสนับสนุนทั้งอุปกรณ์และไหมพรม
จากดอกทิวลิปดอกแรกที่ต้องลองผิดลองถูกอยู่นานหลายเดือน ฉันค่อยๆ พัฒนาฝีมือและเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองผ่านวิดีโอในยูทูป จนสามารถถักดอกกุหลาบ ดอกทานตะวัน และงานปักเฟรมเป็นรูปสัตว์ต่างๆ งานทุกชิ้นเกิดจากความตั้งใจ ความประณีต และความรักในงานฝีมือที่ฉันสั่งสมมา
ก้าวต่อไปด้วยความหวัง
ปัจจุบัน งานโครเชต์ของฉันเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักและสามารถสร้างรายได้เสริมได้ในช่วงเทศกาลสำคัญ เช่น วันรับปริญญา วันวาเลนไทน์ และวันแม่ แม้รายได้จะไม่ได้เข้ามาตลอดทั้งปี แต่ก็เป็นแรงสำคัญที่ช่วยพยุงค่าใช้จ่ายและทำให้ฉันสามารถเรียนต่อมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
ฉันเติบโตมากับงานปักผ้าและงานฝีมือ จึงเลือกศึกษาสาขาธุรกิจระหว่างประเทศ คณะวิทยาการจัดการ มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏเชียงใหม่ เพื่อเรียนรู้ด้านการจัดการและการขนส่งระหว่างประเทศ และนำความรู้มาต่อยอดงานโครเชต์ซึ่งเป็นงานฝีมือที่มีเอกลักษณ์และยังคงมีผู้เห็นคุณค่า
ในอนาคต ฉันหวังว่างานโครเชต์และงานฝีมือต่าง ๆ จะสามารถต่อยอดเป็นสินค้าที่ส่งออกไปยังต่างประเทศได้ พร้อมทั้งสร้างรายได้ให้กับคนในชุมชนจากทักษะที่มีอยู่แล้ว เพื่อเสริมความเข้มแข็งและความยั่งยืนให้กับสังคม
